Situational Leadership and Meeting Agendas
I don’t want to go to a meeting that doesn’t have an agenda, or if there is one please be clear and efficient. Is that what your staff think…sometimes about your meetings? We will cover many tools and tips to making agendas. But what does leadership have to do with agendas? We will look at situational leadership and how mastery of the areas can be used in planning agenda’s and running inspiring meetings. Come learn how the way we choose to lead can increase your team’s effectiveness and buy in. Bring a past meeting agenda. We will run a short activity using the different leadership styles, learn from it, and then take learning to your next meeting agenda. Come play, think, and plan for the future.

Tapping Personal Narrative and The New World of Publishing to Foster Healing, Give Teens a Voice
Discover how personal storytelling techniques and the ease of today’s indie publishing platforms can empower teens and ensure their voices are heard. In this interactive session, NYT bestselling author Ingrid Ricks shares how she found healing and empowerment by writing her coming-of-age story and used it to help more than a thousand teens in both Utah and Washington find their voice by writing — and in some cases publishing — the deeply personal stories they needed to share. From there, she drills down on the process she employs to help youth identify their stories and bring them to life. She will also discuss the different eBook and print publishing options now available and share how they can be used to quickly get teen voices out to the world. All workshop attendees will receive a copy of Ingrid’s narrative writing guide.

Solve for WHY: Finding Joy and Belonging in Afterschool Math
As young children, most people delight in early math concepts. We play with rhythm, pattern, and counting. Somewhere along the way, though, we begin to sort ourselves into those who are good at math and those who aren’t. Or we get sorted, based on our identities and assumptions about our abilities. Though it is socially acceptable to say, “I’m not a math person”, this self- and/or externally-imposed label prevents many creative thinkers from pursuing a number of interests and even careers. As an afterschool professional, you can help youth reclaim their inborn identity as “math people”, whether you do calculus for fun in your spare time, get queasy at the sight of a story problem, or fall anywhere in between. In this interactive session, we will explore a variety of ways to support youth (and maybe even yourself) in seeing the relevance of math in their worlds and experiencing the joy of playing with math again.

Affective Education in the Inner City
Affective education is concerned with the beliefs, feelings and attitudes of students. Proponents of affective education believe that academic teaching should go hand in hand with personal and social education. For a student to perform well, he has to have a sound mind and sound environment. Within the Inner City, affective education holds a vital role in the future of these students. At the Tulsa Dream Center, we have seen extreme success. As we continue to elevate our leadership quality, the success will continue to grow.

Unbiased Child Engagement Strategies
This workshop focuses on increasing equity in expanded learning opportunities by confronting potential personal bias to create a more inclusive and engaging program for all participants. For every child to access all that an expanded learning opportunith has to offer, every adult they encounter during their journey must learn to identify and overcome their own learned implicit biases. In this workshop, we will identify our social system’s core identity categories that create and maintain implicit biases. Participants will then incorporate that knowledge to evaluate past engagement strategies and develop new approaches based on current best practices.
Objectives:
• Explore areas of implicit bias when working with diverse groups
• Develop strategies to engage the whole child in a group setting

Professional Learning in Action
Coming together to make a difference requires education partners to put aside differences and focus on commonalities. The current focus on social and emotional learning (SEL) creates an opportunity for alignment across settings within a school community. Schools and expanded learning programs are powerful contexts where SEL occurs, and working together, these two learning environments can impact young people’s social, emotional, and academic development. Join the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and the Partnership for Children and Youth (PCY) for this interactive session focusing on lessons learned from the California Expanded Learning 360°/365 Professional Learning Community (PLC).
